Trevor Tutu

My lovely dear friend, Trevor Tutu, died in June, only a few weeks after his 70th birthday – far too soon!

I first met Trevor when his family moved to London in 1962, when his father, Desmond Tutu (later Archbishop) was studying at King’s College – we have been close friends ever since. Last year, he wrote the very generous Foreword to Alec. The Church Times kindly published this Obituary on Friday.

Latest reviews of Alec

What began as an intensely personal quest became a broader investigation into family, memory, and the cultural forces shaping identity. The narrative traces Alec’s trajectory from a disrupted Victorian childhood through to remarkable achievements in the heart of Edwardian London’s financial world. Alec successfully floated a major insurance company on the London Stock Exchange shortly after the First World War, only to have his high-flying career derailed by one of the era’s most notorious financial scandals.

Alexander’s account is unflinching in its exploration of family secrets and “skeletons in the cupboard”. Alec’s complex private life – marked by a long-hidden first marriage, a large age gap with his second partner, issues of illegitimacy, and the pain of family separations – mirrors the untold stories in many families, handled with honesty and compassion.

by Lauren Flewett, Truro

I felt a great deal of empathy for the family in this memoir, their tenacity and fortitude as they traversed the changes visited upon them, as they traversed the new era as a family and beyond in bereavement and growth, with a part of Alec within still burning bright

… a thoughtful and well researched memoir that reminds us how meaningful it can be to understand where we come from.

Meeting Andrea Woolhead

Morgen Bailey hosted a discussion with Andrea Woolhead and Malcolm (9 June) covering some of the key issues arising in writing non-fiction. Andrea has recently co-authored Beneath the Regime, Beyond the Fear, a powerful memoir exposing the cost of conscience for Naser Naser – a former Major General in Syria’s Political Security Department – who dared to defy Assad’s regime.

We talked about the importance of keeping to the truth – and sometimes deciding what to include and what to leave out.

Catching up with David Hamilton

An opportunity to chat with my old mountaineering friend, David Hamilton, thanks to the excellent hospitality of John Armitstead.

David hopes to be in Pakistan in July, leading a group of climbers to the K2 base camp.
